The Apollo Lunar Module, which the astronauts used to land on the Moon - An Apollo Lunar Module, is shown on the 20 cent stamp but is is labeled a "Moon Landing Craft", while the 3 cent stamp is titled "Moon Buggy Rover" and shows only one astronaut aboard the two man Moon roving vehicle. This was an important mode of transportation for the astronauts of Apollo 15, 16 and 17 while exploring the Moon's surface Telstar 1 communications satellite - The final stamp in the 1977 series is the 50 cent value showing technicians checking out the Telstar 1 satellite in a laboratory, probably just before launch at Cape Canaveral Florida. This scene depicted has no connection whatsover with the islands Tracking Station anniversary, as compared to the other stamps in the series of which the station was actively involved. Telstar 1 was only one of the many satellites tracked by the Grand Turk station and may have been chosen as a stamp design for this set as it was the first instantaneous relay communications satellite. It was launched on July 10, 1962 and it was a major breakthrough in worldwide communications and the subject of numerous stamps from other countries all over the world for this historical event.

Grand Turk - Ship (3m). Tons: 300 tons. Hull: wood. Comp.: 120; 15. Arm.: 28 guns. Built: Thomas Barstow, Hanover, Mass.; 1781.

The first of four famous American merchantmen to bear the name, Grand Turk was built by the Salem merchant Elias Hasket Derby as a privateer during the American Revolution. Grand Turk was named either for the Ottoman Sultan whose nickname was "Grand Turk," or possibly for the Island in the Caribbean. With 28 guns and a crew of 120, in the course of 22 months she made four lucrative cruises against British merchant shipping, three of them under Joseph Pratt, seizing 16 British ships between Ireland and the Caribbean. Following the war, Grand Turk was stripped of most of her guns, and her crew was reduced to 15. After a trip to the West Indies, she sailed to the Cape of Good Hope where, in 1785, she met Empress of China, homeward bound from her historic voyage to China. She returned to Salem via St. Helena and the Caribbean after a highly profitable voyage. Her next voyage was to the French-held Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, where she was chartered for Canton, thus becoming the third U.S.-flag ship to trade in China. She returned to Salem on May 22, 1787, after a voyage of nearly 18 months. The ship sailed from Salem for the last time in December 1787, bound again for Mauritius, where she was sold.

The second Grand Turk, measuring 560 tons, was built at Salem in 1791. Later sold to Boston interests, she traded to India, China, and Russia. After a long passage from China in 1797, she arrived at Portland, Maine, in deplorable condition. She had lain there two weeks when on January 4, 1798, she was ripped from her moorings and wrecked in a gale.

The most recent ship to carry the name Grand Turk is a fully-rigged ship - complete with twelve smooth-bored cannon - built in Marmaris, Turkey based on the 18th Century, British, Sixth Rate Frigate, HMS Blandford, built in 1741. Naval Architect Ron Holland took the historical lines and created working drawings. The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) were involved at all stages of the build program to ensure that, on completion, she would meet the requirements of Class 3 and Class 5 passenger tickets. She was launched in August 1997. Construction is Iroko planking on laminated Mahogany frames but, unlike her predecessor, she has twin Kelvin TAS8 (400BHP) main engines , a bow thruster and 4 AC Generators.
